Level Up Your Life: Why Gaming is My Self-Care

Written by: Paul Amadeus Lane

Being a C6 quadriplegic and a full-time power wheelchair user means my daily life is full of challenges most people never consider.  From navigating inaccessible environments to managing chronic pain, the daily grind can be exhausting. That’s why self-care is so essential, and for me, that means escaping into the world of video games.

Now, I know what you might be thinking, “Video games? That’s not real self-care!,” but hear me out. Gaming provides me with a unique sense of freedom and control that I often lack in the physical world.  It’s a chance to leave behind the limitations and frustrations of my reality and simply enjoy myself.

In a game, I can be anyone and do anything. I can climb mountains, explore vast landscapes, and even fly. This virtual escape allows me to mentally disconnect from my physical limitations and experience a level of agency that’s often difficult to achieve in my everyday life.  It’s empowering to feel that sense of control and accomplishment, even if it’s in a digital world.

Beyond the escapism, gaming also offers incredible cognitive benefits.  It requires strategic thinking, problem-solving, and quick reflexes, all of which help keep my mind sharp.  Plus, many games involve complex narratives and character development, which can be emotionally engaging and intellectually stimulating. I get to lose myself in intricate stories and connect with characters on a deep level.

But perhaps the most important aspect of gaming as self-care is the social connection.  Online gaming communities provide a sense of belonging and camaraderie. I’ve formed genuine friendships with people from all over the world, sharing laughs, strategies, and a mutual love for the game. This social interaction is vital for combating feelings of isolation that can sometimes accompany disability.

So, the next time you see me immersed in a game, don’t judge.  Understand that I’m not just “playing.” I’m engaging in a form of self-care that allows me to recharge, connect with others, and experience the world in a way that transcends my physical reality.  It’s how I level up my life, one game at a time.
