Self-Care During the Holidays

Written by: Isabella Bullock

The holiday season is often a time of joy and celebration, but it can also be a time of stress and
anxiety. For people with disabilities, the added pressures of the holiday season can be even more
overwhelming. This is why it is important to prioritize self-care during the holidays.
Here are some tips for all of us to help practice self-care during the holiday season:

  1. Manage your expectations: It is important to remember that the holidays do not have to
be perfect. Try to let go of the pressure to have everything go exactly as planned and
allow yourself to enjoy the moment.
  2. Take breaks: The holidays can be exhausting, both physically and emotionally. Make sure
to take breaks when you need them. Whether it’s a few minutes to meditate or a quick
nap, taking time for yourself can help you recharge and stay energized.
  3. Practice gratitude: It can be easy to get caught up in the stress of the holidays, but taking
the time to practice gratitude can help you stay present and appreciate the good things in
your life. Take a few minutes each day to reflect on what you are grateful for.
  4. Connect with others: The holiday season is a time for connection, but it can also be
isolating for people with disabilities. Make an effort to connect with others, whether it’s
through a phone call, video chat, or in-person visit.
  5. Set boundaries: It’s important to set boundaries during the holidays to avoid burnout. This
may mean saying no to certain events or activities, or setting limits on the amount of time
    you spend with certain people.
  6. Prioritize self-care: Make self-care a priority during the holiday season. This may mean
taking a relaxing bath, reading a book, or taking a nap. Whatever it is that helps you feel
calm and centered, make sure to prioritize it.
  7. Practice self-compassion: It’s easy to be hard on yourself during the holidays, but it’s
important to practice self-compassion. Remember that it’s okay to make mistakes and that
you are doing the best you can.
By prioritizing self-care during the holiday season, we can better navigate the stress and
pressures that come with this time of year. Remember to take breaks, practice gratitude, connect
with others, set boundaries, prioritize self-care, and practice self-compassion.
