Pairing Complex Rehab Technology with the Jazzy Carbon

Complex Rehab Technology (CRT) is a customized piece of equipment that addresses the user’s specific needs. There are other power wheelchairs on the market, like lightweight foldable power wheelchairs, that don’t offer those same customization options. I utilize CRT, and my main wheelchair is a Quantum Edge 3, with many features that make life more comfortable for me. However, in addition to my Edge 3, I also own a Jazzy Carbon lightweight chair. Today, I wanted to talk about why I utilize both.

First, it is possible for me to utilize both because I can make the Jazzy Carbon work for me and my circumstances. I replaced the standard cushion for one of my nicer cushions from an old CRT chair I had, which helps avoid pain from sitting for long periods. I also use my Carbon on a temporary basis. I use it while traveling by plane, because it can fit in the wheelchair closet aboard the aircraft and I don’t have to worry about my equipment being damaged in the cargo hold. Not having to put my customized Edge 3 at risk while also maintaining independence and mobility is a huge plus for me. As a child, I used a folding transport chair while traveling, and I hated having someone else push me around. I don’t have to worry about that anymore!

My Jazzy Carbon also opens up my community for me. I live in a small city surrounded by suburbs, where a car is the main mode of transportation. I get around well with my Edge 3 on public transit, but sometimes there are situations when my friends and I would like to go somewhere that can’t be reached by public transit. I am able to put my Carbon in their trunk and not miss out on seeing new places and making memories. The ability to fold up my Carbon and put it in a trunk also helps with my anxiety if I am going somewhere where I am not sure if accessible transportation will be available. I don’t have to worry about getting stuck somewhere; I can just call a regular Uber or Lyft and be on my way.

I feel very lucky to have two different mobility devices that serve their own purpose and help me live the best life I can. Whether I am at home or away, I know I have something I can rely on to keep me independent and in my community. For my specific needs, it serves as a great “backup” chair, but also does what I need any chair to do, which is to get me from one place to another.
