Visiting the Dentist

There are a couple things that kids dislike doing and today I’m doing one of them: visiting the dentist! It’s not that kids don’t like to have clean teeth or fresh breath, but it’s just a scary place at times. I never look forward to dentist visits, they poke your gums and make you hold your mouth open for a long time. All I can think about when I go to the dentist is hoping that the dentist doesn’t find something in my mouth that might make me have to come back sooner. The only part of the dentist that I really like is going home.

Thankfully, when I go to the dentist, I get to stay in my iLevel® Power Wheelchair. With the 12-inch elevation, it makes the experience more comfortable. I can say that my dentist is very nice. They always check to make sure I am comfortable, and they tell me what they are putting into my mouth before they do it. I only get nervous about the dentist because I know that your teeth can get cavities and cavities make you have to visit the dentist often. My mom makes sure that I stay away from candy, but I hear it’s a lot of other things when you’re my age and growing that can cause your teeth to decay.

Sometimes the machines in the dentist office can make kids my age and younger a little nervous. They are loud. The light that they put you under when they are looking in your mouth is very bright sometimes too. I think that might have been the scariest thing when I was young. They finally came up with the idea of letting us use sunglasses. My dentist lets me know what the machines are and that nothing would harm me, but the noise still bothered me sometimes.

On my way to my dentist visits, I try to think of things that I enjoy, like video games and hanging with my friends and that kind of makes me feel better. Sometimes my older brother and sister go with me and my mom to the dentist and that makes me feel better too because I know they have my back. When I was younger, my mom would stand and watch the dentist while they cleaned my teeth and made sure I did not have any cavities. Now that I’m older, I go in by myself. Also, when I was younger after my visits, I would get toys and stickers. Now that I’m a little older, they give me toothbrushes and dental floss. Doesn’t that suck? I mean, I still like toys and stickers. Although the dentist isn’t the most fun thing for kids, it is important that we all go because if you don’t take care of your teeth you will have to get fake ones, and that’s no fun!
