A Time to Honor

Memorial Day is one of my favorite holidays based on the traditions that honor our military personnel. I will go into depth about what I will be doing this year to honor military members.

Memorial Day weekend is one that is filled with many childhood memories that brings a smile to my face. Since I am from Charlotte, special and fun events are happening all weekend long. The Coca-Cola 600 is one of the biggest races of the year and is taking place right in my backyard.

The Coca-Cola 600 has been a race that I have gone to many times over the years. It is a great race but more importantly, they do a great job of honoring those who protect us. From military bands performing to the fly over of military jets, it is a way for people to mourn those who have given all and pays tribute those who continue to serve. I will not be going to the race this year. Still, watching these events on television gives me a greater sense of pride and understanding as to how great the sacrifice truly is. The event brings us closer to each other because we are all Americans who love our country.

Another way that I will honor those who serve and have served is by attending a baseball game. Baseball is the American pastime and attending a game on Memorial Day is a fantastic experience. The game has healed the nation after the events of 9/11 and played a huge part in bringing the world back to normal.

Hearing the national anthem at a baseball game on Memorial Day weekend gives us a new appreciation for our troops who put their lives on the line to protect us. Seeing the flag wave in the wind is heartwarming and is a whole different experience on Memorial Day.

One of my favorite things to do on Memorial Day is to go to war monuments as a way of honoring those who gave all. The Vietnam Veterans Park in Davidson, North Carolina, is one of my favorite places to go. It’s a beautiful park with great history. Closer to my house is Veterans Park in Kannapolis, North Carolina. The water fountain is a great place to cool off. It allows us to think about our soldiers and those who fight for our safety. Going to these places gives me a new sense of amazement and is a great way to mourn as well as honor.

Memorial Day weekend is one that I look forward to every year. The memories that I have from past Memorial Days are ones I will never forget. Let’s not forget those who made the greatest sacrifice. Memorial Day weekend is full of fun but most importantly it is full of appreciation as well as solidarity for those who sacrifice. I am excited to honor our troops!
